Dorothy Jean (Kennedy) Harter, 97, formerly of Leechburg, PA, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Strabane Woods Assisted Living Facility in Washington, PA.

A daughter of the late Elmer Ellsworth Kennedy and Myrtle Irene (Charles) Kennedy, she was born December 17, 1919, in Leechburg, PA.

Dorothy was a 1937 graduate of Leechburg Area School High and a 1941 graduate of Thiel College.  She had been a teacher for over 33 years having taught in the New Kensington School District before retiring from the Leechburg Area School District in 1980.  Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Leechburg, the DAR Massay Haribson-Fort Hand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star #238 (Past Matron), and Leechburg Historical Society.  She volunteered at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights and enjoyed genealogy, reading and playing bridge.

Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Wiggins (Thomas) of Upper St. Clair, PA; and two grandsons, Bryan Wiggins (Anna) and Jeff Wiggins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin F. Harter on August 18, 2000; and two brothers, William E. Kennedy and Richard C. Kennedy.

Friends will be welcomed by her family on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 10 AM-Noon with the funeral to follow the viewing at Noon at Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg (724-842-1051) with the Reverend Jerrad R. Peterman officiating.  Interment following at Greenwood Memorial Park, 104 Melwood Road, Lower Burrell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 251 Main Street, Leechburg, PA 15656; or to the Arthritis Foundation of Western and Central PA, 790 Holiday Drive #11, Pittsburgh, PA  15220.
