William T. "Bill" Carroll Obituary
William T. “Bill” Carroll, 89, of Leechburg, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2026, in his residence.
A son of the late Thomas H. Carroll and Phyllis (Debernardi) Carroll, he was born May 25, 1936, in Kelly Station, PA, then his family moved to Schenley in 1947.
Bill attended schools in Kittanning, Gilpin Township, and Leechburg. He played full back for Leechburg High School football for the WPIAL Championship Team of 1953. He attended Clarion University where he graduated with a B.S. in Education and double major comprehensive social studies and geography in 1958. He then received his Masters degree and High School Principal Certification from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, followed by his Superintendent Certification from West Virginia University. From 1958-1965, Bill taught American History and Government at Leechburg High School as well as being assistant track and football coach. He then served as vice principal at the McGuffey School in Claysville from 1965-1969. He returned to Leechburg High School as a principal from 1969 until retirement in 1993. Additionally, Bill spent 20 years with WPIAL serving on the football committee for seven years and the Board of Control for 14 years. He also served as league treasurer, and eventually prior to his retirement as league vice president, he was inducted into the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Bill also taught historical sessions at VMI and locally in the area throughout his life.
Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran and member of the Leechburg Elks Club for many years, serving eight terms as the Exulted Ruler. He was also a member of the Leechburg Marconi Club and Gilpin Rifle Club, of which he was the last original founding member. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, poker player, and a very good amateur chef!
He is survived by four children, Thomas W. Carroll, Robert J. Carroll (Marcia), William C. ”Geezer” Carroll, and Erin Gruber, all of Leechburg; two grandchildren, Brittany (Carroll) Brahm and Justin Beattie; two great-grandchildren, Eli and Ella Brahm; and two sisters, Vonna Scoggins of Clermont, FL, and Patricia Lewis of Hermitage.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Loretta (Marco) Carroll in 2016; and a sister, Phyllis Peyronel.
Friends will be welcomed by his family on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 4-6 p.m. at the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main St., Leechburg, 724-842-1051. A memorial service will immediately follow in the funeral home at 6 p.m. Private interment will be held St. Mary Cemetery in South Buffalo Township.
