Margit Caroline Mihalyi Kupas, 94, of Allegheny Township, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2022, at Pleasant Ridge Mature Living, following a seven-year struggle with dementia. Born September 5, 1928, in her parents’ home in Coraopolis, PA, she was a devoted and beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. A 1946 honors graduate of Coraopolis High School, she enjoyed a 15-year career with Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania. During her time at the Sewickley and Pittsburgh Stanwix Street offices, she earned twelve consecutive perfect attendance awards and was promoted to senior clerk in the Plant Department.
Margit grew up in a bilingual home, attended Hungarian Summer School, and at celebrations held by the Coraopolis Hungarian Club danced in a traditional Hungarian dress that she sewed herself. At a social dance at the Homestead Hungarian Club in 1954, she met her future husband, Julius Kupas. They married on March 17, 1962, and continued to dance the Hungarian csardas together for 38 years until his death in 2000. Always proud of their shared Hungarian heritage, Margit and Julius traveled to Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine in 1994, reconnecting with cousins and fulfilling a lifelong dream of seeing their parents’ homelands.
A long-time member of Cross Roads Community (formerly Gray Stone) Presbyterian Church in Leechburg, Margit taught the pre-school Sunday School class, served as a deacon, worked many funeral dinners, was a member of the church’s new name task force, and volunteered for the Leechburg Area Food Bank. She was an active den mother for Cub Scout Pack 502 of Allegheny Township, secretary of the troop committee for Boy Scout Troop 551 of Hyde Park, and a Kiski Area Band Booster. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially personalized birthday cakes, reading women’s magazines particularly for new recipes to try, and tending houseplants. She was an avid letter writer since her high school years, corresponding with family and friends of old and new throughout the United States and the World. She cherished her family more than anything else.
Margit will be lovingly remembered by her sons: Douglas Kupas and his wife Natalie of Danville, Daniel Kupas of Allegheny Township, and David Kupas and his wife Angela of Johnstown; grandchildren Paige and Stefan Kupas of Danville; sisters Eleanor Mihalyi Gallati and Alice Mihalyi; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to her parents, Moses and Caroline Heranusz Mihalyi, she was preceded in death by her brothers William and Edward Mihalyi and their wives, and six brothers- and sisters-in-law and their spouses.
Friends will be welcomed by her family on Friday, November 4, 2022, from 3-7 p.m. at the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg, 724-842-1051. Additional visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, at Cross Roads Community Presbyterian Church, 271 Main St., Leechburg, immediately followed at 11 a.m. by funeral ceremonies with Pastor Sue Washburn officiating. Interment following at Greenwood Memorial Park, 104 Melwood Rd., Lower Burrell.
