John "Mappy" Matarrese Obituary

John “Mappy” Matarrese, 77, of Washington Township, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Allegheny Valley Hospital, surrounded by his family.

John was born on March 21, 1948, to the late Giovanni and Maria (Amatulli) Matarrese.  He graduated from Vandergrift High School and served in the United States Army.  For the majority of his life he worked as an operations manager for Victory Packaging.  John was a member of Christ the King Church in Leechburg and several clubs in Vandergrift and Lower Burrell.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved being outdoors doing yardwork, or just relaxing in the sun.  He loved scratch tickets and casinos, especially spending every New Year’s Eve at Wheeling Island.

Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Nancy (Kasan) Matarrese; son, Christopher Matarrese (Melissa); daughter, Krista Matarrese; sister, Dorothy Garrone (Ceasare); brother-in-law, Jerry Cupec; sister-in-law, Helen Matarrese; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Steve, Anthony, and Frank Matarrese; and sisters, Pauline Matarrese and Anna Cupec.

At John’s request, services will be private. John’s family would also like to thank all the wonderful nurses at Allegheny Valley Hospital, Allegheny Valley Cancer Center, and Allegheny Home Healthcare.
