MSGT John R. Arrowsmith, US Air Force, Ret., 89, of Leechburg, PA, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2020 in his residence.
A son of the late John D. Arrowsmith and Helen (Rowe) Arrowsmith, he was born November 8, 1930, in Seattle, Washington.
John retired as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force in 1974 as a flight engineer with 26 years of active service. He served in the military during the Korean and Viet Nam Wars, traveling to many places including Washington State, California, Utah, Washington D.C., Saudi Arabia, Okinawa, Laos, Viet Nam and Germany. He had always shown an interest in aviation with his first flying lessons at the age of 14. After retirement, he worked in the Forest Service in the D.C. area for another 20 years. He enjoyed traveling in the great outdoors by hiking and camping.
Survivors include a son, William D. Arrowsmith of Ogden, UT; daughters, Sue Ellen Horvath (Charles) of Winston-Salem, NC, Debra Carlson (Kurt) of Germany, Sandra L. Christian of Leechburg; sister, Janet Witter of Tacoma, WA; stepchildren, William Hallgren (Susan) of Aberdeen, MD, Jon Hallgren of Columbia, MD, Ann Dougherty (Charles) of Wilmington, De, Temin Carroll of New Castle, DE; and ten grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three wives, Shirley (Barnett) Arrowsmith, Ann (Hallgren) Arrowsmith, Geraldine (Wilkerson) Arrowsmith; and a son, Robert G. Arrowsmith.
There will be no public visitation or funeral ceremonies. Private interment will be made at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg (724-842-1051). Memorial contributions may be made to the Air Force Association, 1501 Lee Hwy., Arlington, VA 22209.
