Ida (Mendicino) Lucas Obituary

Ida Mendicino Lucas of Estero, FL (formerly of Vandergrift, PA), passed away on January 11, 2026, with her beloved sons by her side. Ida was born in Vandergrift on February 4, 1936, to Fedele Mendicino and Eliza Manfredi Mendicino.


A graduate of Vandergrift High School, Class of 1954, she attended business school for two years. Ida retired in 1996 after 30 years of service from the A-K Division Office of the Allegheny Power (West Penn Power) Company. During her tenure, she had roles of increasing responsibility, finishing her career as Meter Reading and Collections Supervisor.


Ida was a life-long member of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church in Vandergrift. For most of her adult life, she was greatly involved in volunteer work and held many offices and chairmanships along the way. Among them were The Catholic Business and Professional Women’s Association, St. Gertrude Church, St. Gertrude Catholic School, Parent-Teacher’s Guild, Little League Mother’s Club, 18 years with Vandergrift Meals on Wheels, and Chairperson for St. Gertrude’s Mercy Lunch Committee.  Closest to her heart was Catholic Daughters of the Americas where she held several offices including the office of Grand Regent and the State Office of District Deputy.  She always felt blessed to have worked beside and built friendships with so many wonderful, inspiring, and exceptional people along the way.


She is survived by two sons, John T. (Eileen) Lucas, Jr., of Marco Island, Florida, and William R. (Connie) Lucas, of Estero, Florida; four grandchildren, William (Vanessa) Lucas, Jr. of Estero, Florida, Emily (Jeremy) Lyons of Mableton, Georgia, Matthew (Daniela) Lucas of Estero, Florida, and Stephanie (Ryan) Smart of Mableton, Georgia. Ida was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Harper, Payton, Aubrey, Noah and David of Estero, Florida, and Lucas, Kennedy and Owen of Mableton, Georgia.


In addition to her parents, Ida was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John T. Lucas in 2016; her brother, F. William “Bill” Mendicino in 2018, and brother, Saverio Mendicino who died in infancy.


At Ida’s request there will be no visitation. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by the Rev. Alan N. Polczynski, to be held at St. Gertrude Parish, 303 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift, PA 15690, on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 11 a.m.  A luncheon reception will follow in the church's Fellowship Hall.  Private entombment will be held in St. Gertrude Mausoleum in Allegheny Township.


Arrangements have been entrusted to the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main St., Leechburg, 724-842-1051, and Hodges Life Celebration Center, Bonita Springs, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ida’s name can be made to St. Gertrude Parish.
