Don E. Shellhammer, 86, of Vandergrift, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2022, at Quality Life Services-Apollo.
A son of the late Earl Shellhammer and Alice (Flickinger) Shellhammer, he was born September 30, 1935 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA.
Don had been employed as an assistant operator for U.S. Steel and Allegheny Ludlum Steel in Vandergrift for 33 years before retiring. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army becoming an expert rifleman at Fort Benning, Georgia, in Battery A 10th Artillery. During his military service, he participated in honor guards for President Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a practical joker. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Vandergrift and President of Bethel Lutheran Cemetery Association.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Dean Myers (Brandy) of Kittanning; numerous nieces and nephews, including nephews, James Shellhammer of Vandergrift, Glen Klingensmith (Nancy) of Vandergrift and nieces, Patti Lucjak (Alan) of Vandergrift, Cheryl Shellhammer of Strattanville; and great-niece, Kimberly Lucjak of Vandergrift.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Eleanor (Myers) Shellhammer in 2015; and a brother, Doyle Shellhammer.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church (119 Bethel Church Road, Ford City, PA 16226) with Rev. Barbara Love officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main St., Leechburg, 724-842-1051.
