Clarence "Smiley" H. Grantz Obituary

Clarence “Smiley” H. Grantz, 93 of Allegheny Township, PA, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, in his residence.

A son of the late Clarence H. Grantz, Sr and Dorothy (Thompson) Grantz, he was born on June 20, 1931, in Kelly Station, PA.

Clarence was a 1950 graduate of Leechburg High School.  He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy where he was stationed during the Korean War. His time and service exemplified his deep sense of patriotism, honor, commitment, and values that defined him throughout his life. Before retiring, Clarence worked as a slitter operator for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation, Bagdad plant of the West Leechburg Works for 40 years. He was a member of Crossroads Community Presbyterian Church in Leechburg where he participated as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday School superintendent and involved in various church mission trips.

Clarence was also very active in his community with memberships in the Masonic Lodges of Leechburg and Coudersport, the D.A.V. and American Legion (both of Vandergrift).  He fulfilled officer positions, including President and Vice President, with the Local 1138 Steelworkers Union and Allegheny Ludlum Retiree’s (President).  He selflessly gave his time and energy to those in need by volunteering with the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard, Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and United Way Board of Directors for nine years, or simply lending a hand to friends and family.  He inspired everyone around him with his compassion and generosity.  Clarence enjoyed woodworking, bowling, and spending time with family and friends at his camp at Crooked Creek. He was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Evelyn J. (McWhinney) Grantz, of 68 years who he fondly referred to as his “Angel on Earth” and to which his last words were, “I love you”; daughters, Karen Guyaux of Lower Burrell, and Kelly Heavner (Gregory) of Allegheny Township; six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Grantz of North Apollo; sisters, Valjean LaBanish of Greensburg and Sharyn Grantz of Ford City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Brian Scott Grantz; a daughter, Corinne Fleming; sisters, Darlene Hartge and Charlene Anderson; and son-in-law, Robert Guyaux.

He held a special place in his heart for his “Southern Belle” Missy, and also his niece and inspiration, Emily.  Fair winds and flowing seas, Smiley. Your service, kindness, and love will forever be cherished in our hearts.

Arrangements are private and have been entrusted to the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main St., Leechburg, 724-842-1051.
