Carol “Joan” (Elder) Hughes, 83, formerly of Leechburg, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2024, at Kane Community Living Center in Scott Township.

A daughter of the late Samuel Elder and Edna Mae (Eshbaugh) Elder, she was born February 11, 1941 in Sligo, PA.

Joan was a homemaker, childcare provider for many families over the past 40 years, and of the Methodist faith.  She enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, taking long walks, and watching TV game shows.

Survivors include her sons, Shawn P. Hughes (Antonella) of Bethel Park, Scott A. Hughes (MaryAnn Rees) of New York, NY; a granddaughter, Abigail Hughes; her surrogate grandkids, Joe, Jessa, Jaila Manga; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hughes in 2013; brothers, Bill, Jack and Connell “Doc” Elder; sisters, Eleanor “Sis” Sayers and Janet Ochs.

Friends will be welcomed by her family on Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main St., Leechburg, 724-842-1051.  Private interment with family ceremony will be held at the Sligo Cemetery.   Her family suggests memorial donations be made to the local library of the donor’s choice.
