Alice “Yam” Louise (Hopkins) Newton, 100, of Bethel Township, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at her residence.
A daughter of the late Robert Leon Hopkins and Adella Margaret (Klingensmith) Hopkins, she was born February 5, 1921, above the Penn Grill in Leechburg.
Alice was employed by the United Mine Workers’ of America as a visiting nurse before retirement. She was an avid bowler and of the Presbyterian faith. She was a member of the Pittsburgh Counsel of International Visitors and served as the past president of the Wilkins Elementary School PTA in Swissvale. Alice enjoyed vacationing at Sandy Pond in New York and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy N. Smith (Robert) of Meadville; daughter-in-law, Patricia L. Newton of Bethel Township; four granddaughters, Christina M. Gross (Stephen), Rachel A. Newton, Elisabeth N. Smith (Mariana Silva), Natalie L. Smith (Jennifer Dafcik); three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Noah, Sophia; and two nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Rex H. Newton Jr. in 2007; a son, Robert D. Newton in 2008; and a brother, Robert Joseph Hopkins in 1999.
There will be no public visitation or funeral ceremonies at this time. Private arrangements have been entrusted to the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg (724-842-1051). A celebration of her life will be held this summer at Sandy Pond in New York with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York.
