Sophie (Prokopchuk) Kostecki, 94, of West Leechburg, PA, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Harmar Village Care Center in Cheswick.
A daughter of the late Michael Prokopchuk and Magdalena (Stadnick) Prokopchuk, she was born March 28, 1923, in Stanislav (currently Ivano-Frankovsk), Ukraine.
Sophie was a homemaker and member of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in West Leechburg. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery and spending time with her family. Sophie was famous for her Easter Paska bread.
Survivors include her two sons, Charles P. Kostecki (Linda) of Pittsburgh, PA, and John F. Kostecki (Joanne) of Arizona; grandson, William Kostecki; step-grandchildren, Vincent Thompson (Erin) and Christopher Thompson (Lauren).
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Peter “Pete” Kostecki on February 28, 1980; a brother, Charles Prokopchuk; and a sister, Anna Prokopchuk.
Friends welcomed by her family on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and Wednesday, August 9, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, with a Parastas Service held at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, at Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg (724-842-1051). Concluding Prayers of Transfer will be held at 10:30 AM at the funeral home on Thursday, August 10, followed by Requiem Divine Liturgy held at 11:00 AM at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Main Street, West Leechburg, with the Reverend John D. Gribik officiating. Interment following at St. Catherine Cemetery, 614 Evergreen Road, Gilpin Twp.
