John W. Koleny, 94, of Allegheny Township, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Logan Place in Lower Burrell.
A son of the late Charles and Justine (Mysko) Koleny, he was born June 17, 1929 in Springdale, PA.
John was a 1947 graduate of Springdale High School and a 1957 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed as the Chief Silicone Metallurgist for U.S. Steel for 28 years before retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Pine Run Presbyterian Church in Markle. He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family and going to Florida for the winter season. John was a participant and member of several organizations including Meals on Wheels in Vandergrift, Golden Senior Citizens, VFW Post and Lions Club in Allegheny Township, and Give Kids the World in Kissimmee, FL.
Survivors include his sons, John C. Koleny (Elise) of Lexington Park, MD, James K. Koleny (Mary Ann) of Gilpin Township, Jeffrey J. Koleny (Mary Anne) of Gilpin Township; seven grandchildren, Lindsay (Doug) Sprankle, Justin, Allison and J. Michael Koleny, Margaret “Maggie” and Matthew Banichar, Eric (Kim) Murray; and five great-grandchildren, Ava Powell, Taedem and Azlynn Banichar, Rowan Murray and Duke Sprankle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Joanne D. (Day) Koleny in November 2023; and siblings, Michael Kostie, Charles Kostie, Anna J. Kostie, and Mary Louise Phillips.
Friends will be welcomed by his family on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral ceremonies beginning at 1 p.m. at the Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main St., Leechburg, 724-842-1051, with the Rev. James V. Arter III officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park, 104 Melwood Rd., Lower Burrell, with military honors conducted by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard.
