Wilmer L. Myers, 92, of Gilpin Twp., PA, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in Kittanning.
A son of the late Merle E. Myers and Esther S. (Wolford) Myers, he was born March 30, 1924, in West Leechburg, PA.
Wilmer served as a Staff Sergeant with the Army Air Force during World War II, having flown dozens of missions as a ball-turret gunner on B-17 airplanes in Europe, participating in four major campaigns and being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Before retiring in 1985 after 40 years of service, he was employed as a roll setter at Allegheny Ludlum West Leechburg plant where he was affectionately known as “Peanuts” by his co-workers. Wilmer was a member of the First Baptist Church in Leechburg where he served as a former trustee, the Keenageers Club and Retirees Local #1138. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and listening to gospel music.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Dorothy V. (O’Hara) Myers of Gilpin Twp., PA; a brother, Ronald K. Myers (Kathleen) of Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Clayton C., Kenneth A., Edgar M. and Virgil L. “Bo” Myers; and a sister, Aline E. Bee.
Friends welcomed by his family on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg (724-842-1051) where funeral ceremonies will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday with Chaplain David Duvall officiating. Interment following at Greenwood Memorial Park, 104 Melwood Road, Lower Burrell.
