George J. Mamros Jr.

George J. Mamros Jr., 74, of West Leechburg, PA, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 in his residence.

A son of the late George J. Mamros and Anna (Palko) Mamros, he was born April 6, 1943, in Allegheny Twp., Westmoreland County, PA.

He began his teaching at West Leechburg Elementary School where he organized the “Elementary Olympics” for the students. George taught in the Leechburg School District for 35 years, becoming known by his students as “The Living Legend.”  After retiring in 1999, he continued substitute teaching until the age of 70.  For over 35 years, he coached the Leechburg High School football team as head coach and assistant.  George was a member of Christ the King Parish in Gilpin Twp., a previous volunteer West Leechburg fireman, a life member of the Elks Lodge 377, and member of the West Leechburg Borough Council.  He was very involved in the designing and building of the West Leechburg Park and Memorial.  He loved his grandchildren, gardening and trips to the casinos with his wife.  Most of all, George always wore a welcoming smile and was a friend to all he met.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Dolores (Heinrich) Mamros of West Leechburg, PA; his son, Christopher Mamros (Debbie) of Iowa; three grandchildren, Josh, Ben and Ali Mamros; a brother, Andrew Mamros (Pam) of Leechburg, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Mamros; and a sister, MaryAnn Mamros.

Friends welcomed by his family on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 from 2-8 PM at Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg (724-842-1051).  Parting Prayers of Transfer will be held at 10:15 AM on Thursday, Sept. 21, at the funeral home, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Parish, 125 Park Road, Gilpin Twp., with the Reverend James H. Loew, O.S.B. officiating.  Interment following at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, 1030 Pleasant Hill Road, Allegheny Twp.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of George to the Allegheny Valley Cancer Institute, 1301 Carlisle Street, Natrona Heights, PA 15065; or to the American Heart Association, 444 Liberty Ave., Suite 1300, Pittsburgh, PA  15222.
