F. Mendicino Obituary

F. William “Bill” Mendicino, 80, of Lower Burrell, PA, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 in his residence.

A son of the late Fedele Mendicino and Eliza (Manfredi) Mendicino, he was born December 10, 1937 in Vandergrift, PA.

A graduate of Vandergrift High School Class of 1955, Bill was honored by his fellow classmates who voted him Class President.  He was an outstanding athlete in high school excelling in football, basketball and baseball.  His excellence on the football field earned him many athletic scholarships.  He attended Penn State University playing on the freshman team in 1955 and on Varsity the subsequent years.  He graduated from Penn State in 1960.

In 1960, Bill started employment at United States Steel Corporation, where he ultimately spent 40 years in the Industrial Engineering Dept. at the Fairless Works in Morristown, PA.  He transferred to US Steel’s Edgar Thomson Works in 1962, where he was eventually promoted to General Supervisor.  In 1976, Bill was promoted to Pittsburgh Headquarters which was the beginning of a series of promotions including Chief Industrial Engineer at the company’s National Duquesne Works and Manager of Industrial Engineering at the Mon Valley Works.  The Mon Valley included the consolidation of all the corporation’s plants in the Pittsburgh area.

In 1982, Bill was named General Manager of Industrial Engineering in Pittsburgh.  After a series of moves, he became General Manager for US Steel’s international subsidiary, US Steel Engineers and Consultants, with the responsibility for activities in North America, South America and Europe.  He enjoyed the interaction with the various foreign companies and particularly with learning the different aspects of the cultures in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina which was required for successful conduct of business.  He also enjoyed Europe and in particular Italy where he visited the birthplace of his mother and father.  He retired in 1998 then moved to Florida in 2001, returning to the Pittsburgh area in 2013.

Survivors include his sister, Ida Mendicino Lucas of Lower Burrell, PA; two nephews, John T. Lucas Jr. (Eileen) of Hudson, OH and William R. Lucas (Connie) of Estero, FL; two great nephews and two great nieces, Emily K. and Stephanie A. Lucas of California, William R. Lucas Jr. (Vanessa) and Matthew D. Lucas of Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Saverio Mendicino, who died at the age of 2.

At Bill’s request, there will be no public visitation.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday, March 16, 2018, at St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, 315 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift with the Reverend James H. Loew, O.S.B., celebrant, and the Reverend Michael J. Sciberras, co-celebrant.  Private interment will be held at St. Gertrude Cemetery where Bill will lay with his parents.  Immediately following the Mass, relatives and friends are welcome to meet with Bill’s family in the St. Gertrude Church Hall and join them for a bereavement luncheon in his honor.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to St. Gertrude Church Building Fund, 315 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift, PA  15690.  The Clawson Funeral & Cremation Center, 170 Main Street, Leechburg (724-842-1051) has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
